I agree with that:
"My only concern and observation is that some of these buildings in the area - including the Canada Post building are quite isolating. In terms of the building’s relation to the street and ultimately the neigbhourhood as a whole. Even the Old Port Interpretation Centre...
"

D'un coté c'est ; "open space", market, nomadic space , little waterfront with marina, bike-trail, public-space "

I would like to comment on the subsequent responses to the message that I posted previously . Hopefully I understood your comments correctly - I'm not really fluent in French!

I absolutely agree that the neigbhourhood has been blighted with some banal architecture. The Federal redbrick buildings are a perfect example. The only positive thing that I can think of regarding these buildings is that it adds some new usage of space to a fomer industrial site and the scale of the buildings matches the rest of the neighbourhood.

The site (Federal redbrick building) sits on such an important site; on the waterfront adjacent to a UNESCO recognized historical jewel. These redbrick buildings could be anywhere from Quebec City to Cape Town South Africa. I'm not saying that every building needs to be an eye catching sculpture but given the fact of it's superior location, the red buildings now look like a wasted opportunity for something special.

I understand that the buildings in the area reflect the different usages; commercial, industrial, residential, institutional etc. I'm in total agreeance of mixed usage. In fact it's the most healthy way of creating a fully vibrant neighbourhood. My only concern and observation is that some of these buildings in the area - including the Canada Post building are quite isolating. In terms of the building's relation to the street and ultimately the neigbhourhood as a whole. Even the Old Port Interpretation Centre before it's renovation was quite isolating. The overall look of the building was like a bunker or an island onto itself. Hopefully with the new glass it will look more transparent and more inviting.

Again I'm NOT saying that the buildings across the street should be replicated, as they are residential. In fact there are some modern looking new homes and condos in the area that are mixed in with the 19th century buildings. Even though these buildings are of a more contemporary design, they work really well - because these new buildings respect the scale of the neighourhood and try to reflect it's surroundings by not replicating but complimenting.

Just because an building is industrial does not mean that it needs to turn "it's back" from the street. I think this is a modern invention that has destroyed so many North American cities. As a person who comes from outside the city to visit, one of the city's appeals is of course it's charm and beauty but even more importantly is the scale of the city. Old Quebec is is alluring to the eyes as it tries to evoke images of the past but it's becoming quite "Disneyfied" In the older non touristy neigbhourhoods - i.e. St. Jean Baptiste, Montcalm, Sillery the appeal is beyond architecture. Everything is on a human scale, you see people walking around, their is life on the streets. Buildings, streets and districts are multi-functioning. Great cities around the globe like London, Paris, New York, Barcelona all have this in common. In North America this sort of city is something people aspire their city to become and for some it seems cities (i.e. Detroit) it is a distant dream.

Quebec City already has these qualities. It is not doubt a beautiful city and the area around the Old Port is truly a unique gem. Planners and architects have a really tall order in preserving all the elements that make this neighbourhood work one building at a time. As North American's it's really hard to not suburbanizing everything because that sort of planning and architecture is so plentiful and ubiquitous.

If I understood this correctly the new owners of this building will renovate the building from inside to outside. Thank goodness! This building is such an ugly eyesore and is totally incoherent with the buildings on the other side of the street. What is even more sad is that it sits on such an amazing piece property right next to the water. The buildings on this side of the street need to be of a better design. Hopefully the espace 400 buildings will be a catalyst. Overall St.Paul street lacks warmth. It feels like a surrogate highway. I think if the road was narrowed down on each side to include a bike lane and a line of trees grown in the middle as a median it would make it much more inviting to pedestrians and humanizing it as well.
